Course Curriculum

📚 Module 1: Design Thinking Overview +
  • What design thinking is -- and what it is not
  • Origins: IDEO, Stanford d.school and the design revolution
  • Design thinking vs traditional problem-solving vs agile
  • When to use design thinking -- and when not to
  • The 5 stages: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test
📚 Module 2: Empathise -- Understanding Real Users +
  • Ethnographic research: observing users in their natural context
  • Empathy interviews: listening without assumptions or solutions
  • Shadowing users through their actual experience
  • Affinity mapping: organizing empathy data into themes
  • Customer journey mapping from the user's point of view
📚 Module 3: Define -- Framing the Right Problem +

  • The How Might We (HMW) question technique
  • Point of View (POV) statement: user + need + insight
  • Why solving the wrong problem brilliantly still fails
  • Stakeholder alignment on the problem before ideation starts
📚 Module 4: Ideate -- Generating Creative Solutions +
  • Brainstorming rules: defer judgment, build on ideas, go for quantity
  • SCAMPER: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to other uses, Eliminate, Reverse
  • Crazy 8s: 8 rough ideas in 8 minutes -- quantity over quality
  • Reverse brainstorming: how would you make the problem worse?
  • Dot voting and prioritisation to select the best ideas to prototype
📚 Module 5: Prototype -- Making Ideas Tangible +
  • The minimum viable prototype -- testing assumptions cheaply
  • Paper prototyping for speed and learnable failure
  • Digital wireframes with Figma or Balsamiq
  • Service blueprints for experience-level prototypes
  • Testing with colleagues before spending on real users
📚 Module 6: Test & Embed Innovation Culture +
  • User testing script and facilitation -- the think-aloud protocol
  • 5 users reveal 80% of usability problems -- the research-backed rule
  • Synthesising feedback into improvement priorities
  • Iteration loops: design thinking is non-linear
